The Faculty of Science offers a full range of degree courses in science subjects, over 105 in all. Its laboratories participate in major national and international research projects with CERN, the European Space Agency and NASA in particular. These contacts obviously open up excellent opportunities for students whether it be in the area of work placements, graduate programmes or doctoral research.
In 1995, the Faculty of Medicine embarked upon a complete overhaul of its study programme. It was the first medical faculty in Switzerland to undertake this kind of reform with the aim of making its students more autonomous and improving their clinical, communicational and practical skills. A quality assessment carried out in 1999 by a group of international experts was very positive regarding the results of the reform.
At the same time, the Faculty has sought to increase student motivation and to provide more training in biological and medical research for students and recent graduates. Together with a programme to provide incentive for the appointments of new, young faculty members, these measures will guarantee the continuing scientific excellence of research teams in the Faculty. The Faculty of Medecine is proud to boast approximately 200 faculty members, many of them having received world-wide recognition and acclaim.
