The “Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois” (University Hospitals of Lausanne) provides medical care to Swiss nationals and foreign residents. The CHUV is part of a vast network of local and national hospitals covering a wide range of facilities supporting patient care, education and research since more than a century. Dating back to the 18th century, the history of the CHUV is associated with scientific discoveries and innovations which have greatly contributed to the advancement of modern medicine. With an annual budget amounting to nearly 1 billion Swiss Francs and 6’600 employees, among which1’250 are involved in medical research, the CHUV carries out two essential functions. On the one hand it is the General Hospital for the Lausanne area (about 200’000 people). On the other hand, it stands as the healthcare reference and tertiary care provider for approximately 600’000 people. About 40,000 patients are treated every year at the CHUV, representing a total of 420,000 hospitalisation days. Patients benefit from highly qualified medical professional, and well-trained technical and paramedical staff. Individual training for all new technologies is organized directly within the CHUV, as well as by the Faculty of Biology and Medicine. The cooperation between CHUV and UNIL, strengthened by their common Technology Transfer Office, offers the ideal setting for new discoveries and applications in essentially all fields of medicine. |
